SHS scholars bowl at Phillipsburg on Monday, 1/25/21 has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled

Due to the incoming weather, USD 271 Schools will not be in session on Monday, January 25th.

2021-1-22
Rooks County continues to see new COVID-19 cases throughout the county. The absenteeism rate remains the same as last week at 1.1% above the baseline from 2019-2020. The positive testing rate continues to decline and is at 18.8% this week. Rooks County is starting to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and will follow the Kansas Vaccination Phases. Kansas moved into Phase 2 this week, so Rooks County will complete Phase 1 and will then move into Phase 2.
School districts will continue in-person for the week of January 25-29, 2021. If there is any adjustment required to the learning setting due to concerns in the schools, we will update your family quickly following a decision.
KSHSAA adjusted their guidelines regarding participation and spectators. Beginning January 29 through the end of the winter activities regular season, districts will be permitted to allow up to four spectators per participant. Districts may have stricter policies based upon facilities and local health guidelines.
Rooks County School Districts have done an excellent job working to minimize the spread in our county. At this time all of the schools in the county are planning to allow up to four spectators per participant if the nature of the event allows us to do so. The districts will make this determination per sport/event. In addition, each district throughout the state will have their own policy for entrance. Please check prior to attending the event.
The Rooks County School Districts encourage all spectators to follow the regulations as presented in each district. The current policy will be monitored closely and will change as needed. Face masks and social distancing are required at all times and at all events. Children attending an event must sit with their parent/guardian. We ask spectators to only attend the events, which their students are participating. Should we see an increase in the spread or if spectator attendance becomes unmanageable, we will not be able to continue with four spectators. We are working hard to ensure all contests are live streamed. If possible, we encourage fans to attend virtually.
We ask you to do everything you can to help us keep our students in school and our community in a healthy place. Please wear a mask when you interact with anyone outside your immediate household and avoid all gatherings, large and small. We are thankful to live in a county where we take care of one another.

KSHSAA and USD 271 Parent/Guardian Event Update
USD 271 Board of Education, at a special Board meeting, approved that two parents/guardians (per family) can attend events, if the facility can accommodate 6 foot social distancing. USD 271 will follow the new KSHSAA guidelines regarding participation and spectators.
Parents/guardians will be required to wear face masks at all times in the building and must social distance 6 feet apart from each other. Parents/guardians must be listed on the pass gate to enter the facility. The pass gate policy will be implemented for all MCL schools. Additional information regarding MCL decisions will be posted on our social media sites. In order to maintain two parents/guardians as spectators and keep a 6 foot social distance we would ask parents/guardians to only attend games their student is participating in.
There will be no concession stand at events. USD 271 will continue to live stream all events.

Rooks County continues to see a high number of new COVID-19 cases. The absenteeism rate is increasing (6.0% above the baseline from 2019-2020). The positive testing rate is 33.8% this week and the two week incident rate remains high. RCH reports they are still having difficulty finding receiving hospitals when patients require transfer to a higher level of care.
As you are aware, spectators are not allowed to attend events and activities in our schools. While we know this is disappointing to our parents/guardians, fans, and communities, we are thankful our students are able to play ball, to wrestle, and to participate. Many of the events will be livestreamed either through our own media production sites or through the towns where we are visiting. Information regarding the events will be posted as it becomes available.
Please understand that these modifications are implemented in the best interest of not only our students and student athletes but also our communities. Rooks County continues to see a high number of new COVID-19 cases (65 over the last week) and still has a positivity rate of more than 40% this week. RCH reports they are still having difficulty finding receiving hospitals when patients require transfer to a higher level of care. With families gathering during the Thanksgiving holiday, we expect a further increase in the number of cases during the next two weeks and plan to modify our extracurricular activities to minimize the risk of transmission at a school-based event. Beginning Monday, November 30th, there will be no spectators allowed at athletic contests, both Junior High and High School. We are planning to live stream all events.
At this time, USD 271 plans to return to in-person learning for the week of November 30 - December 4, 2020 for grades Pk-12. If there is any adjustment required to the learning setting due to concerns in the schools, we will update your family quickly following a decision.
We would like to ask the community to help us keep our schools open by helping reduce the spread in the community. This can be accomplished by wearing face coverings, implementing social distancing, practicing good hand hygiene, and limiting social gatherings. Please keep all students home if they are feeling ill.
We appreciate the support of the community as we work through these issues each week. It is important for us to work together to keep our students, staff, and community safe. Your efforts are noticed and appreciated. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

All districts in Rooks County will be on an extended Thanksgiving break next week with NO School the week of November 23-28. Please enjoy this time with your immediate family. We encourage you to relax and appreciate the time with your loved ones.
Rooks County has seen a significant increase in both the number of positive cases and the rate of positive tests. Hospitals in Kansas are feeling the effects of this increase in very serious ways. RCH does have bed space available today but is experiencing difficulty every day with finding a place for patients who need transfer to a higher level of care. HaysMed and Salina are at capacity and currently on diversion, so patients are being transferred to Wichita or Kansas City. These cities are also noting bed shortages, which is concerning. What we do locally impacts these numbers.
With the holiday season upon us, we ask you to do everything you can to help us keep our students in school and our community in a healthy place. Please wear a mask when you interact with anyone outside your immediate household and avoid all gatherings, large and small. We are thankful to live in a county where we take care of one another. Rooks County has seen a significant increase in both the number of positive cases and the rate of positive tests. During the month of October, RCH tested an average of 50 people per week and had a positivity rate of 22%. The week of November 2-8, 2020, RCH tested 99 people and saw a positivity rate of 37%. Since November 9, 2020, RCH has tested 112 people and has a current positivity rate of 47%. These changes are similar to numbers across Kansas and the US, where the number of new cases per day have set records. Kansas had an average of 2430 new cases per day for the last week. The US had more than 163,000 new cases yesterday.
USD 271 has experienced several COVID-19 cases over this week. We are scheduled to return our PreK-5th grade from remote learning to in-person learning with many staff returning at that time. At this time we will plan to return to in-person instruction on Tuesday for PreK-5 except for classes and persons who are still quarantined. All 6-12 grade classes will continue in-person learning for the week of November 16-20, 2020. If there is any adjustment required to the learning setting due to concerns in the schools, we will update your family quickly following a decision.

Positive cases of COVID-19 in a student or staff member:
The Rooks County Health Department is notified of all positive cases of COVID-19 in the county. Once the Health Department is notified of a positive case, they are required to call all of the close contacts to the positive case.
A close contact is someone who has been within 6 feet of a case for 10 minutes or more or had direct contact with bodily secretions (for example, being coughed or sneezed on). Any students or staff that maintained a 6-foot distance from the positive case would not be considered close contacts and would therefore not be subject to the 14-day quarantine period.
The time period for close contact tracing includes any day(s) the positive student or staff attended school and the preceding 48 hours prior to symptom onset (symptomatic cases) or the preceding 48 hours prior to sample collection (asymptomatic cases).

As was stated in our update on Friday, we have an increase in the number of active cases, as well as we are waiting for test results for some students and staff. Our ultimate goal is to continue in person instruction and this day will allow for staff self-care and a thorough cleaning of the building while staff and students are not present.
We would like to ask our parents/caregivers to help us keep our schools open by helping reduce the spread in our school and community. This can be accomplished by face coverings, social distancing, good hand hygiene and to limit social gatherings. Please keep all students home if they are feeling ill.
We appreciate the support of the community as we work through these issues each week. It is important for us to work together to keep our students, staff, and community safe. Your efforts are noticed and appreciated. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

USD 271 and Rooks County Health Department will be using the Modified Isolation and Quarantine Requirements set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in order to provide students and staff with a safe on-site learning environment in the event of a positive case of COVID-19 in a student or staff member.
Below is an explanation of the Modified Isolation and Quarantine Requirements:
The Modified Isolation and Quarantine Requirements specifically address requirements around maintaining continuity of learning in the situation where all students and staff in a classroom are exposed to COVID-19; namely the modified quarantine requirements for close contacts of a case. What this modified quarantine allows is the ability for all students and staff in the exposed classroom to continue physically attending school during their quarantine period. This guide includes some specific engineering and administrative controls that must be in place before the modified quarantine of close contacts is allowed.
Modified Quarantine Requirements: These modified quarantine requirements are contingent on the close contacts of a case remaining asymptomatic. Students and staff who have had an exposure but remain asymptomatic should adhere to the following practices prior to and during the school day: o Arrival and dismissal times: Students and staff on modified quarantine must arrive and leave school on a staggered schedule without interacting with the general school population. o Pre-screen: School administrators should measure the quarantined student and staff temperatures and assess symptoms prior to the start of the school day. Ideally, temperature checks should happen before the individual enters the school building. o Medical check-in: If the quarantined student or staff becomes sick during the day, they should be sent home immediately. Surfaces in their workspace should be cleaned and disinfected. Anyone who develops illness compatible with COVID-19 during the quarantine period should notify the school administration. o Wear a mask: The quarantined students and staff should wear a face mask/face covering at all times while in the school. o Physical separation: The quarantined students and staff should be physically separated from the general school population. All activities, including mealtimes and classes like art and music, should take place within the classroom. o Bathrooms: The quarantined students and staff must have their own designated bathroom or, if feasible, common bathrooms must be cleaned after a quarantined student or staff have used them. o School activities: Quarantined students and staff should not participate in any activities that involve interaction with non-quarantined students and staff. This includes before and after school care and all school-related activities.
We currently have a classroom in one of our buildings that we are using the modified Isolation and Quarantine on due to an exposure from COVID-19. The Rooks County Health Department has contacted all of the direct contacts to the positive case, all staff, and parents of the students in the specific classroom.

Rooks County schools have had a decrease in COVID-19 activity this week. While we have some students who are quarantined at home, we have no known transmission of COVID in our schools. Our decision is based on a continued low level of absenteeism in the schools (only 1.6% above baseline from the 2019-2020 school year), a declining positive testing rate in the county (10.7% over the last two weeks) and a decreasing incidence rate in Rooks County over the last two weeks.

Rooks County Schools Update 09.28.2020
Rooks County experienced a dramatic increase in COVID-19 activity over the weekend with 32 new positives and three deaths. There are currently 36 active cases within the county, including several that impact our schools. Due to our careful and consistent use of masks and disinfection protocols, we have been able to limit absences due to COVID-19 and are currently working with two cohorts of students in modified quarantine within the county. These students are allowed to continue in-person learning as a group unless they become ill. We continue to see no evidence of COVID-19 transmission in our schools.
After an extensive review of the data and conversation with our local health experts, we will continue in-person learning for the remainder of this week and monitor the situation closely.
Due to concerns about the evidence of increasing community-based transmission, we are changing attendance policies at all sporting events in the county. Athletes will receive tickets to disperse accordingly. Each athlete will have a predetermined number of tickets for volleyball and football games. All spectators must wear masks at all times during sporting events. If we follow these measures, we will be able to continue having spectators at sporting events. Without these measures, we will transition to no spectators until COVID-19 transmission rates are lower in the county.
These are challenging times for everyone. We appreciate your continued support and trust in our team.
Bill Lowry, Supt.

09/27/2020 Update
USD 271 Stockton Schools has received confirmation that an individual at Stockton High School (grades 8-12) has tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of active cases to 3 in the district.
The Rooks County Health Department is in the process of conducting contact tracing, most of which is complete.
The district has been in constant communication, and cooperating fully, with the Rooks County Health Department as they perform the necessary contact tracing and we will continue to follow their guidance.
The Rooks County Health Department is responsible for contacting students/staff who need to quarantine due to close contact with the individual who tested positive. If you are not contacted by the Rooks County Health Department or the school district instructing your child to quarantine, your child can continue to attend school.
USD 271 is following the procedures of mask wearing, social distancing, temperature screening, and disinfecting so schools can remain open.
USD 271 students, staff, and community members should continue to screen yourself and please stay home if displaying symptoms of COVID-19.
As we navigate situations such as this, please be assured that the health and safety of our students and staff are of utmost importance.
If you should have any questions, please contact your school administrator or the Rooks County Health Department.
Thank you for your patience and ongoing support.

September 25, 2020
The weekly new COVID-19 cases in Rooks County have doubled in just one short week, from an average of 9 new cases per week to 18 new cases in the past seven days. Last week at this time we had 11 active cases in our county, this week we have 22. The two-week percent positive test rate rose from 7.5% last week to 11.2% this week. The unpredictability of this virus is frustrating and concerning. Fortunately, our absenteeism rate in the schools remains stable and relatively few students and teachers have been impacted by illness or quarantine.
Given these concerning trends, the Rooks County school districts and medical health officials are monitoring the situation more closely this week and will meet again on Monday afternoon to review the information from the weekend and new numbers published on Monday at lunch. We plan to start the week by continuing in-person learning on Monday, September 28, but we recognize that we may need to change the learning environment midweek if these worrisome trends persist or worsen.

2020-09-18
For the week of September 21 through 25, all schools in Rooks County plan to continue with in-person learning. Our decision is based on a continued low level of absenteeism in the schools (only 0.5% above baseline from the 2019-2020 school year), a low positive testing rate in the county (5.7% over the last two weeks) and a decreasing incidence rate in Rooks County over the last two weeks.
When reviewing all relevant metrics for COVID-19 in our county, we are in the green zone, which means we may continue with our current method of education according to the Kansas State Department of Education Navigating Change guidelines.
All of the districts in the county have the same goal of keeping our students in school. As we settle into the 2020-2021 school year, we want to share information from our school team to you, the families who entrust us with your children. All schools in our county are participating in a weekly call to review the current metrics, consider the overall situation in the county, consult with local health experts and make a plan for the following week. One of our goals is to send out an informational message each week on Friday afternoon that will include the learning plan for the following week as well as some of the data on which we base our decision.
For the week of September 14 through 18, all schools in Rooks County plan to continue with in-person learning. Our decision is based on a low level of absenteeism in the schools (less than 3% above baseline from the 2019-2020 school year) and a relatively low positive testing rate in the county (6.2% over the last two weeks).
Based on this information and other metrics, including hospital capacity and number of new cases in our county, our health experts support our decision to continue in-person learning under the condition that all students and staff continue to wear masks and socially distance. It is clear these measures have been effective at preventing COVID spread in the event of an infected student or staff member.
We will continue to monitor the data closely and provide another update next Friday. Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions about the information or the decision.

Press Release - Rooks County Schools COVID-19 Advisory Group
In preparation for the upcoming school year a Rooks County Schools COVID-19 Advisory Group has been created with representatives from the medical community and all Rooks County schools (USD269, USD270, USD271, and Sacred Heart School). The purpose of the advisory committee is to gather and discuss the most up-to-date information from Rooks County Public Health, CDC, KDHE and KSDE, then to provide recommended policies and procedures to the schools in terms of how to safely start and continue the 2020-21 school year.
Safely reopening all Rooks County school buildings is our first priority. The foundation of all discussions is to protect and ensure the social, emotional and physical well-being of students and staff. Decisions and actions will be determined based on the current information from CDC with close collaboration with Rooks County Health officials, KDHE and KSDE.
Although definitive plans for the August reopening have not yet been created in Rooks County, schools remain committed to providing quality learning opportunities for all students which may include onsite, hybrid, and/or remote learning environments.
KSDE is expected to release guidance to all Kansas schools and the public by July 16. After reviewing this guidance, the Rooks County Schools COVID-19 Advisory Group will provide recommendations for school policies and procedures. Updates will be provided through school websites and media outlets.

Our USD 271 posts are often directed toward our elementary students. We have found a resource we can share with our middle and high school students. Dr. Tim Elmore is an author and speaker. He is an expert on Generation Y and Generation Z. Tonight we are sharing an activity called Trains and Tracks (Structure). We hope you can engage your teen in this chat.
Think about a train moving along tracks. It would be easy to assume the tracks prevent the train from moving freely, but it’s just the opposite. The tracks give the train focus and direction. A train without tracks is just a disaster waiting to happen. You are just like this train. If you want to move forward you’ll need structures and systems to keep you on track and help you make progress. (Thank you Dr. Elmore and staff.)

Time to start thinking of Monday!
Lunch, 3-30, will be:
Pig in a Blanket, veggie bowl, fruit, milk.
Next day is breakfast, cereal, juice, milk.

To Staff, Students and Parents
3-28-2020
Governor Kelly today issued a stay at home order for the State of Kansas from Monday March 30th until April 19th. With the guidance from State Board of Education, KSDE, KASB and KNEA this order does not affect the current operations that the School District is currently doing. The reason is that the School District is listed as an essential service. The staff will continue to provide lunches, clean the school buildings and continue the planning for our continuous learning. We will adhere to the guidelines of less than 10 people at least 6 feet apart.
This week our Continuous Learning Plan will be completed and approved by the Board of Education. We will submit a waiver to the Kansas State Board of Education. Teachers will be in contact with all students about details of their continuous learning. The information for each student’s continuous learning will be released each Monday starting April 6th and continue through May 15th.
It is important that everyone support the continuous learning process so each student will be successful this year and be ready to be successful next year.
We are here to support every student and parent during this process. Please contact any staff member if you have questions or a need that we can help you with.
#WeAreTigerReady!
Thank you for your support!
Bill Lowry, Supt.

Governor Kelly made an executive order today to close schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. All activities will be canceled. This will include Prom and Graduation as currently scheduled. The Continuous Learning Committee will be making recommendations for the District to use to create a Continuous Learning plan for USD 271. This plan should be able to be completed by March 30th. It is a priority of our School District to develop a plan that all students can continue to learn and Seniors can earn their High School diploma. All of the teaching staff will be utilized in this plan. We will continue to serve breakfast and lunch during this period on a grab and go basis for children 1-18 years of age free of charge. We will continue to communicate updates during these two weeks.

USD 271 is closely monitoring the COVID-19 virus. We receive daily updates from KSDE who is working closely with KDHE and CDC. We are “mitigating the risk” of COVID-19 by following the guidelines and recommendations from the state’s medical leadership. We are asking all parents to self-report any out of state or out of country travel to the school office where your child(ren) attends. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are a fever and lower respiratory infection with cough. Students and staff may not attend school if they have not been fever free for 24 or more hours without the use of medication. We are under the direction of the Rooks County Health Department regarding school closure.

Community Groups
Our district was asked, “What is the one thing, that if we don’t include in our redesign, nothing else matters,” Relationships was always the answer! Every day our students PreK-7 meet for 30 minute sessions, (this includes transition time) with a community of students of 15-17 students. Each community is led by two staff members who are passionately building relationships and discussing essential skills for the future to be “Tiger Ready!” During this time, communities form a close bond to each other and study skills such as our Tiger Touchstones (Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Creativity, and Confidence). We also study the Habits of Mind, practice mindfulness, participate in service projects, and also find time to have fun and play. Our goal is for all of our students to have at least one trusted and caring adult they can rely on as they go about their years in our building. Our students love this time each day and each group has something special they have knitted together with joys, celebrations, struggles, challenges, and most of all a sense of belonging.
Once a month our community groups get together with a high school group to do a special activity and get to know each other better. The high school communities meet twice daily. They start and end their day together. There focus is on gratitude, goal setting, team building, individual plans of study, and other information focused on the high school learner.

Redesign Spotlight
Family Engagement
One of our three goals of redesign focuses on family engagement. Our planned focus for the 2018-2019 school year included a parent night for each quarter of the school year. We continued our monthly read aloud evenings focusing on our birth-six year audience. You will also see us at the Rooks County Free Fair again this year! #TigerPride271

The Burgers, Band, and Buckets Concert (band students in grades 5-12) that was scheduled for Sunday, May 5th will not be taking place. Thank you for all your support in years past for this fundraiser

What is PBL?
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method that is focused on student learning goals through knowledge and skills gained by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to authentic and engaging questions, problems, or challenges.
PBL focuses around 8 essential project design elements:
Key knowledge, understanding, and success skills
Challenging problem/question
Sustained inquiry
Authenticity
Student voice & choice
Reflection
Critique & revision
Public product
These design elements work together to help students develop 21st century soft skills while also gaining the content knowledge necessary for academic success. Students get the the opportunity to dig deeper into an area they are interested in by developing driving questions and solving authentic, real-world problems.
Project Based Learning creates an environment for teachers to target not only content knowledge gained, but also development of the skills needed to be successful in the 21st century. This kind of approach allows students to explore their own interests while meeting content standards and real-world skills in ways that are authentic and meaningful.
Both content knowledge and 21st century skills are obtained by completing long term projects that are focused around 8 essential project design elements: knowledge, understanding, and success skills, a challenging problem or question, sustained inquiry, authenticity, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, and finally, a public product.
Project Based Learning requires active participation by students, which makes school more engaging while focusing on the application of the knowledge students are gaining. By giving students the opportunities to take initiative and responsibility for learning, we can help all reach their potential with a successful project that has real-world impact.

On Wednesday of this week Courtney Flower was a guest during 7th Grade Kansas History. She explained how the city of Stockton functions as a city, her role as city manager/clerk, skill set and education to be successful in the position. We discussed how the budget works to pay employees, pool expenses, street repairs and the water treatment plant.
The class was engaged and inspired by what it takes for the city to function on a daily basis.

Our 6th Grade Science classes had guest speaker Denae Odle come talk about LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) along with natural resource use in construction techniques and energy consumption. She helped us start exploring environmentally friendly alternatives for our communities. We are grateful for our community experts for Project Based Learning!

Redesign Spotlight
As part of our social-emotional goal area, USD 271 staff has participated in three in-services with Rebecca Lewis to become trauma responsive. Through this training, we have implemented Zones of Regulation with our students and staff. Zones of Regulation is a tool used to help monitor, self-regulate and control emotions. Zone of Regulation uses four colors, red, yellow, green and blue, to help students visually and verbally recognize how they are doing emotionally at any given moment. Students and staff understand that anyone can experience the four zones throughout their day, but by understanding the zones, we are learning to adjust our thinking and using our tools to get us back into the green zone and ready to learn or teach.
"They help me so I can think of how I feel and then I can think of how to have a better day. Because if I am frustrated, I get angry and cannot think to do my math. Zones of Regulation help me get control so I can think." 4th Grader

We had a bus-deer accident east of Stockton this morning, close to Woodston. There were NO students on the bus and the driver is fine but the bus is not drivable. Another bus and driver have been sent to cover the route.

K-7 Personalized Learning
Personalized learning allows all children to receive a customized learning experience. Students learn at their own pace with structure and support in challenging areas. Learning aligns with interests, needs and skills, and takes place in an engaging environment where students gain a better understanding of their strengths. ( National Center for Students with Learning Disabilities, Personalized Learning: Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities)
Our Kindergarten through 3rd grade classes take part in mixed-age guided reading groups. K-5 is using Lexia Core5 for personalized English/Language Arts instruction and DreamBox for Math instruction. This allows them to complete grade-level materials at their own pace. Lexia provides teachers with a recommended amount of units for each student to complete each week to stay on-target for grade-level success. The Junior High is using Power Up and Reading Plus as a personalized English/Language Arts platform. Several classrooms are using playlists for students to track their personal goals each week. This provides students with choice, accountability, and specific things they need to focus on. In the classrooms, teachers are utilizing small group instruction to deliver instruction geared toward different skills that students are working on as well as delivering the same materials at different levels.

Redesign Spotlight:
8-12 grade communities
Relationships are key at USD #271 Stockton, and we are starting and ending each day with this in mind. Research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation and Stanford Research Center has all concluded that 85% of job success comes from having well-developed soft skills and people skills and only 15% of job success comes from technical and knowledge (hard skills).
At SHS students in grades 8-12 meet for the first ten minutes of school and the final 20 minutes of the day with their teacher advisor. These students will continue with the same group throughout their high school years. There are 14 community groups, consisting of 8-10 students ranging from 8-12 grades. Students form long-lasting relationships that benefit from a consistent daily presence.
In the a.m. meeting, students begin their day by writing in their journals: reflecting on one thing they are thankful for, a goal for the day or week and identifying which Zone of Regulation they are in. This is an opportunity for students to begin on a positive note, set goals and be aware of their emotional state. Students can also take advantage of the grab and go breakfast offered in the hallway as they enter.
The p.m. meeting consists of students and advisors working together on character development through discussion and reflection on our Tiger Touchstones and developing habits for success with the 16 Habits of Mind. Students are also developing their Individual Plans of Study, which includes exploring career interests and skills through the Career Cruising program, developing their Vision Board and sharing with parents, and planning their future course of study for high school and beyond. Advisor teachers serve as mentors to guide their students through this process.

6th-7th grade Mentoring
As students in middle school encounter and struggle with social and emotional changes that occur during this transitionary period to adulthood, many educators seek to help students develop skills and dispositions—such as resilience, perseverance, and determination—to ensure that they can problem-solve and work through challenges as well as take ownership of their learning and decisions (National Middle School Association [NMSA], 2010).
At USD 271 we spend mentor time meeting the needs of students. We have three groups with a mixture of 6th and 7th grade students that meet once a day for 20 minutes. During this time, we cover essential life skills (Organization, Time Management, Self-Control, etc.) as well as improving students’ understanding of techniques to build confidence, increase self-esteem, advocate for themselves, build character, and be respectful young adults.
During mentor sessions, we use a variety of resources: Choices magazine from Scholastic, Career Cruising program, and Responsive Advisory Meeting Book. Career Cruising allows the students to find out what interests them and it gives insight on the steps they will need to take to achieve careers in a particular field. All three mentor groups cover the same concepts but at different times. Mrs. Dunlap’s group is currently working on deeper understanding of career interests and researching careers in that area. Miss Kennedy’s group has had extensive conversations about stress, what causes stress, and how to effectively manage stress. Mrs. Moffet’s group has been working hard on character building.

There will be NO SCHOOL today in Stockton; Monday, 2.25. The blower motor on the boiler has failed and there is no heat in the secondary building.

As we continue to communicate with our stakeholders, we will return to our weekly Redesign Spotlight. Each week we will spotlight one of our redesign implementations. Today we are sharing some background on the Kansans Can School Redesign Project.
In 2015, Kansas State Board of Education announced its new vision for education- Kansas leads the world in the success of each student.
Kansans have identified the need for their schools to transition to a student -focused system that provides support and resources for individual success. We are moving away from a “one-size-fits-all” system that relies exclusively on state assessments.
Kansans want schools to place an equal amount of focus on assisting students in developing nonacademic skills, like social-emotional growth, as they do on developing academic skills.
In August of 2017, USD 271-Stockton was named a Mercury School in Redesign. Our vision- We are TIGER Ready! (TIGER stands for tiger touchstones, innovative, grit, empowered, and relationships) is guiding us through school redesign.
