USD 271 Redesign Spotlight 6th-7th grade Mentoring As students in middle school encounter and struggle with social and emotional changes that occur during this transitionary period to adulthood, many educators seek to help students develop skills and dispositions—such as resilience, perseverance, and determination—to ensure that they can problem-solve and work through challenges as well as take ownership of their learning and decisions (National Middle School Association [NMSA], 2010).  At USD 271 we spend mentor time meeting the needs of students. We have three groups with a mixture of 6th and 7th grade students that meet once a day for 20 minutes. During this time, we cover essential life skills (Organization, Time Management, Self-Control, etc.) as well as improving students’ understanding of techniques to build confidence, increase self-esteem, advocate for themselves, build character, and be respectful young adults. During mentor sessions, we use a variety of resources: Choices magazine from Scholastic, Career Cruising program, and Responsive Advisory Meeting Book. Career Cruising allows the students to find out what interests them and it gives insight on the steps they will need to take to achieve careers in a particular field. All three mentor groups cover the same concepts but at different times. Mrs. Dunlap’s group is currently working on deeper understanding of career interests and researching careers in that area. Miss Kennedy’s group has had extensive conversations about stress, what causes stress, and how to effectively manage stress. Mrs. Moffet’s group has been working hard on character building.

As we continue to communicate with our stakeholders, we will return to our weekly Redesign Spotlight. Each week we will spotlight one of our redesign implementations. Today we are sharing some background on the Kansans Can School Redesign Project. In 2015, Kansas State Board of Education announced its new vision for education- Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. Kansans have identified the need for their schools to transition to a student -focused system that provides support and resources for individual success. We are moving away from a “one-size-fits-all” system that relies exclusively on state assessments. Kansans want schools to place an equal amount of focus on assisting students in developing nonacademic skills, like social-emotional growth, as they do on developing academic skills. In August of 2017, USD 271-Stockton was named a Mercury School in Redesign. Our vision- We are TIGER Ready! (TIGER stands for tiger touchstones, innovative, grit, empowered, and relationships) is guiding us through school redesign.
