K-7 Personalized Learning
Personalized learning allows all children to receive a customized learning experience. Students learn at their own pace with structure and support in challenging areas. Learning aligns with interests, needs and skills, and takes place in an engaging environment where students gain a better understanding of their strengths. ( National Center for Students with Learning Disabilities, Personalized Learning: Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities)
Our Kindergarten through 3rd grade classes take part in mixed-age guided reading groups. K-5 is using Lexia Core5 for personalized English/Language Arts instruction and DreamBox for Math instruction. This allows them to complete grade-level materials at their own pace. Lexia provides teachers with a recommended amount of units for each student to complete each week to stay on-target for grade-level success. The Junior High is using Power Up and Reading Plus as a personalized English/Language Arts platform. Several classrooms are using playlists for students to track their personal goals each week. This provides students with choice, accountability, and specific things they need to focus on. In the classrooms, teachers are utilizing small group instruction to deliver instruction geared toward different skills that students are working on as well as delivering the same materials at different levels.

It's time for another reading challenge! We hope you build reading into your spring break plans! If you get a BINGO, please return the form to the SGS office or Mrs. Bennett when you return from break. #TigerPride271

Before the staff stepped away for a much deserved Spring Break, they came together as a full pk-12 staff to focus on our “why” and “How might we-?” design thinking. It’s becoming less redesign and more -now design! #kstothemoon @ksredesign #TigerPride271

Amazing Adaptations! Our Pk-7 students and staff learned how animals use adaptations to thrive in their environment. Zoo To You by Rolling Hills Zoo and the Dane G. Hansen foundation.

Congratulations to Quinn, Trenton, Rylan, Addie and Jalen for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the Rooks County Youth Entrepreneur Challenge. Quinn and Trenton also won the Technology Award. In all these SHS students are bringing home $1,100 in prize money! Way to go!

Our Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge students did an excellent job presenting today! So proud of their work!

Redesign Spotlight:
8-12 grade communities
Relationships are key at USD #271 Stockton, and we are starting and ending each day with this in mind. Research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation and Stanford Research Center has all concluded that 85% of job success comes from having well-developed soft skills and people skills and only 15% of job success comes from technical and knowledge (hard skills).
At SHS students in grades 8-12 meet for the first ten minutes of school and the final 20 minutes of the day with their teacher advisor. These students will continue with the same group throughout their high school years. There are 14 community groups, consisting of 8-10 students ranging from 8-12 grades. Students form long-lasting relationships that benefit from a consistent daily presence.
In the a.m. meeting, students begin their day by writing in their journals: reflecting on one thing they are thankful for, a goal for the day or week and identifying which Zone of Regulation they are in. This is an opportunity for students to begin on a positive note, set goals and be aware of their emotional state. Students can also take advantage of the grab and go breakfast offered in the hallway as they enter.
The p.m. meeting consists of students and advisors working together on character development through discussion and reflection on our Tiger Touchstones and developing habits for success with the 16 Habits of Mind. Students are also developing their Individual Plans of Study, which includes exploring career interests and skills through the Career Cruising program, developing their Vision Board and sharing with parents, and planning their future course of study for high school and beyond. Advisor teachers serve as mentors to guide their students through this process.

The National Honor Society is organizing this year's Collect for Cures Program at SHS. This is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's effort to help those affected by blood cancers. SHS's online giving webpage at https://events.lls.org/pages/mid/StocktonHighSchool-2019 Ends 3/18.

Due to the dangerous wind chill being forecast for the morning hours, there will be no school in Stockton tomorrow, 3.4.19. The JH Scholars Bowl has been cancelled and will not be made up.
The SHS staff hosted staff from Lyons High School today. The on-site visits give schools an opportunity to learn about the redesign process. #TigerPride271 @ksderesign

6th-7th grade Mentoring
As students in middle school encounter and struggle with social and emotional changes that occur during this transitionary period to adulthood, many educators seek to help students develop skills and dispositions—such as resilience, perseverance, and determination—to ensure that they can problem-solve and work through challenges as well as take ownership of their learning and decisions (National Middle School Association [NMSA], 2010).
At USD 271 we spend mentor time meeting the needs of students. We have three groups with a mixture of 6th and 7th grade students that meet once a day for 20 minutes. During this time, we cover essential life skills (Organization, Time Management, Self-Control, etc.) as well as improving students’ understanding of techniques to build confidence, increase self-esteem, advocate for themselves, build character, and be respectful young adults.
During mentor sessions, we use a variety of resources: Choices magazine from Scholastic, Career Cruising program, and Responsive Advisory Meeting Book. Career Cruising allows the students to find out what interests them and it gives insight on the steps they will need to take to achieve careers in a particular field. All three mentor groups cover the same concepts but at different times. Mrs. Dunlap’s group is currently working on deeper understanding of career interests and researching careers in that area. Miss Kennedy’s group has had extensive conversations about stress, what causes stress, and how to effectively manage stress. Mrs. Moffet’s group has been working hard on character building.
