What is PBL?
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method that is focused on student learning goals through knowledge and skills gained by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to authentic and engaging questions, problems, or challenges.
PBL focuses around 8 essential project design elements:
Key knowledge, understanding, and success skills
Challenging problem/question
Sustained inquiry
Authenticity
Student voice & choice
Reflection
Critique & revision
Public product
These design elements work together to help students develop 21st century soft skills while also gaining the content knowledge necessary for academic success. Students get the the opportunity to dig deeper into an area they are interested in by developing driving questions and solving authentic, real-world problems.
Project Based Learning creates an environment for teachers to target not only content knowledge gained, but also development of the skills needed to be successful in the 21st century. This kind of approach allows students to explore their own interests while meeting content standards and real-world skills in ways that are authentic and meaningful.
Both content knowledge and 21st century skills are obtained by completing long term projects that are focused around 8 essential project design elements: knowledge, understanding, and success skills, a challenging problem or question, sustained inquiry, authenticity, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, and finally, a public product.
Project Based Learning requires active participation by students, which makes school more engaging while focusing on the application of the knowledge students are gaining. By giving students the opportunities to take initiative and responsibility for learning, we can help all reach their potential with a successful project that has real-world impact.

On Wednesday of this week Courtney Flower was a guest during 7th Grade Kansas History. She explained how the city of Stockton functions as a city, her role as city manager/clerk, skill set and education to be successful in the position. We discussed how the budget works to pay employees, pool expenses, street repairs and the water treatment plant.
The class was engaged and inspired by what it takes for the city to function on a daily basis.

These students completed a Spring Break Reading Challenge Bingo Challenge! We celebrated with ice cream and more books! #TigerPride271

Our 6th Grade Science classes had guest speaker Denae Odle come talk about LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) along with natural resource use in construction techniques and energy consumption. As part of our social-emotional goal area, USD 271 staff has participated in three in-services with Rebecca Lewis to become trauma responsive. Through this training, we have implemented Zones of Regulation with our students and staff. Zones of Regulation is a tool used to help monitor, self-regulate and control emotions. Zone of Regulation uses four colors, red, yellow, green and blue, to help students visually and verbally recognize how they are doing emotionally at any given moment. Students and staff understand that anyone can experience the four zones throughout their day, but by understanding the zones, we are learning to adjust our thinking and using our tools to get us back into the green zone and ready to learn or teach.
"They help me so I can think of how I feel and then I can think of how to have a better day. Because if I am frustrated, I get angry and cannot think to do my math. Zones of Regulation help me get control so I can think." 4th Grader
