Redesign Spotlight Community Groups Redesign Spotlight Community Groups Our district was asked, “What is the one thing, that if we don’t include in our redesign, nothing else matters,” Relationships was always the answer! Every day our students PreK-7 meet for 30 minute sessions, (this includes transition time) with a community of students of 15-17 students. Each community is led by two staff members who are passionately building relationships and discussing essential skills for the future to be “Tiger Ready!” During this time, communities form a close bond to each other and study skills such as our Tiger Touchstones (Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Creativity, and Confidence). We also study the Habits of Mind, practice mindfulness, participate in service projects, and also find time to have fun and play. Our goal is for all of our students to have at least one trusted and caring adult they can rely on as they go about their years in our building. Our students love this time each day and each group has something special they have knitted together with joys, celebrations, struggles, challenges, and most of all a sense of belonging. Once a month our community groups get together with a high school group to do a special activity and get to know each other better. The high school communities meet twice daily. They start and end their day together. There focus is on gratitude, goal setting, team building, individual plans of study, and other information focused on the high school learner.

Redesign Spotlight Family Engagement One of our three goals of redesign focuses on family engagement. Our planned focus for the 2018-2019 school year included a parent night for each quarter of the school year. We continued our monthly read aloud evenings focusing on our birth-six year audience. You will also see us at the Rooks County Free Fair again this year! #TigerPride271

Redesign Spotlight What is PBL? Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method that is focused on student learning goals through knowledge and skills gained by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to authentic and engaging questions, problems, or challenges. PBL focuses around 8 essential project design elements: Key knowledge, understanding, and success skills Challenging problem/question Sustained inquiry Authenticity Student voice & choice Reflection Critique & revision Public product These design elements work together to help students develop 21st century soft skills while also gaining the content knowledge necessary for academic success. Students get the the opportunity to dig deeper into an area they are interested in by developing driving questions and solving authentic, real-world problems. Project Based Learning creates an environment for teachers to target not only content knowledge gained, but also development of the skills needed to be successful in the 21st century. This kind of approach allows students to explore their own interests while meeting content standards and real-world skills in ways that are authentic and meaningful. Both content knowledge and 21st century skills are obtained by completing long term projects that are focused around 8 essential project design elements: knowledge, understanding, and success skills, a challenging problem or question, sustained inquiry, authenticity, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, and finally, a public product. Project Based Learning requires active participation by students, which makes school more engaging while focusing on the application of the knowledge students are gaining. By giving students the opportunities to take initiative and responsibility for learning, we can help all reach their potential with a successful project that has real-world impact.

During our first Inservice of 19-20 @povertyedge pleaded with us to remember self-care as we launched our redesign. We listened and it’s been rewarding. We start every Inservice day with wellness and laughter! #Strongertogether #TigerPride271 @ksderedesign
